Thanked: 0"Franz Swaty WAHRING bei WIEN (austria)" - rings a bell?
So I have this block. No clue what it is.
"Franz Swaty WAHRING bei WIEN (austria)" are the only markings. The block is about 2 inches by 7 inches and dark brown in color.
Do you know the grit? Is it any good?

Now that I measure it, it's about 5 1/4 by 2 inches... not 7.

Thanked: 0I was just looking for this thread. . . only with some answers. I have a Swaty as described above. Wahring is not defined in any German/English dictionary. Bei is 'at.' Wien is 'Vienna.' Also (Austria) is stamped below. It is interestingly translated into English.
Most of the Swatys on ebay have Marburg, Austria stamps. I looked up the ebay transaction for my Wahring Bei Wien and it was listed as Marburg, Austria, too.
I just did a Wiki search on Marburg, Austria and got no hits. It says Marburg is in Germany (or Queensland). Oh well.
I asked previously about Swaty hones and someone more knowledgeable than I am said they are 10-11K grit.
Having used mine a while, I think that's about right.
I would like to know how to tell a Pike Swaty, a three line Swaty (the kind Joe Lerch uses) and any other Swaty info I can find.
Maybe someone who knows something will come along.
Regards

Thanked: 0Fascinating, Graz, Austria is only 30 miles away. I wonder if that counts.
It's beginning to look like Swaty (and/or son) made hones with different labels, perhaps at different locations. Later, other manufacturers made "Swaty" hones to capitalize on name recognition.
After a couple hours, I don't have much new knowledge about Swaty hones. However, I wonder if I have gained some insight into business ethics of the past.

Many Swatys have Wahring bei Wien which means Wahring near Vienna. Maybe the closeness to a large city was considered to be better for sales.
