The dreaded white line
I've seen this a few times on one of my razors I had been honing and always using a coticule. I mostly read of other peoples posts about this phenomenon.
What is this the dreaded white line seen at the apex of some coticule edges? It undoubtedly leads to some uncomfortable shaves.
I've got my theories on what it is but no definitive proof.
Well what do you think?

Both bevel edges not contacting at the apex of the edge is what the white line is. Normally seen with magnification but if you see it with the naked eye than its really big! Bevel not being completely set is another way to say it.
It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 133I think it has something to do with using slurry on coticule. Also if you just use coticule for finishing on that razor then it isn't suppose to be a problem. I think it is either some cotis have weird garnets that can cause this or maybe just some metals don't like slurry from a coticule. I don't know much on subject but that is what I think it.

This is well after bevel set and well into the finishing process.

We are not talking about the same thing. I don't know your background or how long you've been honing. I don't know your experience with coticule stones or how adept your skills are with them. If you've handled 1 or 100 but the bevel is set on a 1k, progressed 4, 6 or 8k and then to coticule and this white line of death appears. It happens on dilucot edges too.

Thanked: 4826It sounds to me like the fin has broken off. I am presuming you are looking straight down on the apex. Looking at the side of the bevel if you see a white line that if parallel to the edge, to me that indicates a fin that is becoming fragile and although the razor may shave like a dream now, it is often an edge that does not have a lot of shaves before it looses it. Maybe try going to the coti after the 4K. Your edge may be getting over cooked.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Yes Shaun. It's a phenomenon usually seen from the side going parallel with the apex. Not visible from the top.

Hey no worries man. You'll get experience when you play with your coti a little more. Then you'll want another.
