It is your face and your beard, so you have the right to set your expectations as high as you want.

I have a fast growing, tough beard, and sensitive complexion, so my expectations of my edges are quite high. I never could achieve the edge I wanted using a 12K Naniwa. That prompted me to try several natural finishing hones. I now have one I use on most of my razors. However, some razors seem to work best on a different stone.

There are also some ultra fine synthetics such as the Shapton 16K and 30K hones and the Suehiro 20K hone. They are expensive.

I also find that I get better edges if I use paddle strops with 0.50 and 0.25 micron CBN paste after the hones. I am considering trying a 0.01 or 0.015 micron CBN, but I do not know if I will be able to tell the difference.

There are other sprays and pastes you can use as well (monocrystaline and polycrystaline diamond, chromium oxide, cerium oxide, etc.).
