Thread: Scratches from honing

I use Norton stones finishing with Naniwa 12k. When using the Norton stones after I have flattened them and chamfered the edges I can get scratches in the middle of the hollow between the spine and blade edge. What am I doing wrong?

I'm sure someone else will have a good answer to this. I've never had that problem and I've honed hundreds of razors. Maybe you are using WAY to much pressure or you are going off the sides and somehow touching the hollow?

On a fully hollow blade (assuming that's what you have) you'd have to be using so much pressure as to flex the blade. Or the other thing may be something you are doing at the end or beginning of your stroke. As you know, the shape of the blade is designed to stay above the stone. If you are beginning your stroke with too much of the blade off the hone the corner might be touching it. Or I suppose it could do the same at the end. Either that or way too much pressure?

My guess is you are running off the end of the hone, and it will be worse with slurry. Stop you stroke 3/4” from the end of the hone.

Yep, sounds like your going off the ends of the hone, to me as well.
