Thread: Test hair!

So i took my grandmother in to the stylist today for her weekly fix. And was talking with the stylist (she has been cutting my hair also for about 20 years) about the hanging hair test. And she reaches under one of the cabinets and brings out a sack of ponytails. Then puts a samples of 3 different ones in sandwich bags for me to take home and put on my workbench!

There is some blonde, dark, and red hairs of different thicknesses.

Now i just have to explain to my wife why there are 3 different womens hair in my shop

I bought a cheap human hair "fall." It has three varieties of hair in it; coarse to fine but each color is consistent. Since the hairs were chemically damaged eg. bleached and colored, they were a bit harder than they could be if fresh. I started with the fine and it works well.
It would probably equal your Blonde.
Have fun, consistency is your watchword doing the test.

Do it from both sides of the bevel ! It checks for a proper bevel meeting exactly along the length of the edge. That will save you having a razor that shaves one side of the face better than the other.

thegeek, I use my arm a lot also. you can always tell a guy who sharpens stuff from the bald forearms, and lately my legs are looking mighty splotchy also........

Richard, I didn't know that you could purchase human hair? but I guess it makes sense as you can buy just about anything else..... I do usually test for shave on my arm in both directions to test for a burr that may be bent over.

I'm pretty excited to start testing with these 3 new hairs. and it all started when I asked the stylist some questions about hair. see I had a handful of my wifes hair that she had pulled from her brush a couple weeks ago that I keep in the drawer next to the sink to test with, but then a batch that I pulled from her brush to keep in the shop I could not cut. I thought maybe the strop I made for the shop wasn't as good as the one I bought from srd and keep in the bathroom, but come to find out it was that when I took her hair from the brush, it was from much closer to the center of the brush, the stuff that got would around the brush when she first got it, and the stuff she took off it was from much more recently.

so now ill have more testing media to play with! just from a quick glance at the salon, the dark hair looks to be about 4 times the diameter as the blond hair, so would that make it easier or tougher to cut? I do remember at a knifesmith get together a couple months ago, a friend took my belt knife and was looking it over, then he took a hair from another fellas beard {coarse wiry, looks like you could scrub dishes with it sort of beard hair} and proceeded to cut halfway into the hair, then turned that cut and continued that cut down the lenth of the hair a ways. and that was with a 325 grit edge. which id never even thought to try, and figured he had really steady hands to make a cut like that, but seeing the differences in the diameter of this hair, I now realize that my friends beard isn't really hair, but miniature trees growing from his face :}
