Do yo have a loupe?

I suggest you get one, they are very inexpensive and can let you see the edge and what is happening. Micro chips were mentioned, they will give you the rough feel you are describing.
If they are there, you will have to hone down the edge past where the steel has degraded.

Also could be your stropping as mentioned as well. It is a very fine line to get a proper smooth edge to shave with.

I always hone flipping each stroke

I have a loupe 20x juwelers loupe and a 60x cheap one from eBay with led light and always look at my edges
but to say that it tells me something
I only see if the edge is straight , and that is the case
plus it looks nice polished
not too many scratches from rougher stones

is it possible to see micro chpping or a fin with these enlargements ??

Look at the edge after you feel the toughness of the shave. Then see what the dye looks like. You may not see micro chips after honing.

what do you mean by the dye
the color / shade of the bevel after shaving and before stropping ??

I studied my stropping and it looks like I do it right
but am gonna concentrate on it better anyway

Just to clarify some terms


Bevel = The sides of the very end of the blade, the sides of the bevel come together to form the Edge aka Fin

Fin = The very very very end of the bevel, the actual cutting edge of the blade

Smooth vs Sharp

Any edge that comes together can be "Sharp" not all are "Smooth"

I have said this dozen of time "A trained monkey can get a razor "Sharp" it takes a little talent to get it Sharp and Smooth"

Let me illustrate

This is "sharp" also, and if you think about the very "Fin" looking like this under High Magnification you understand the difference between Sharp and Smooth



The Edge has to be Sharp, Even, and Smooth, and it will feel good on the face

I understand these terms well.
But is this visible under 20x magnification or 60x ?
As my edge looks quite straight. I compare it with well honed razors and see no difference.

If you are "Feeling" a difference, that is what matters.


Visual is only one input to honing,

If I were in your shoes I would do the Step Challenge and see what you find (hehe just saw the pun in there)


Set the bevel Strop 20 laps on just leather and test shave
try the same at mid-level
try the same at pre-finisher
finally at Finisher

Normally these are considered to be ABOUT 1-4-8- Finish

This lets you learn what each level brings to the edge and how to get the most out of them
