Thanked: 1Interesting hone found in thrift store
I found a rally nice hone in a thrift store a while back. The stone is dark brown in color and has some green veining in a couple of spots. To the touch it feels smoother than my chinese 12k. I don't know who makes it but I really like it. Does anyone have an idea what it is?
Thanks Adam

It reminds me a little of a Kimberly barber hone. I feel sorry for the razor that rode that hone though. Looks like a straight down the hone with pressure applied to the center kinda guy.

Clean it up
You'll know a lot more after you clean it up. One way to tell if it's natural as opposed to artificial is that natural stones tend to be chamfered on the edges. This is not true 100% of the time but... usually true. The Belgians have always been chamfered for instance. Also, look at the color of the slurry that comes off of the stone. If it's the same color as the stone then it is probably artificial; if it's a different color it probably is natural. Be sure to check the sides and the ends under good light and magnification to see if there might be any markings. An indication of natural stone might be saw marks on the ends as few makers ground the ends flat... but some did! At the high end guess, it might be a true blue-green thuringian and at the low end it might be an artificial barber hone. HSI is Hone Scene Investigation.

Any more word on this hone? I'm kind of curious.
