    Default Friodur help

Ok, I have a 7/8 Friodur that I got shave ready from Altima. It shaved well for a number of months. Now I'm trying to get it back in the zone and I just can't seem to get over the hump.

I've tried my Thuringen/Hunsrueck (which is usually all I need for most of my razors) as well as chromium paste. No dice. Yesterday I went back to the Norton for 5/5, 1/5, 1/5 then about 12 more on the 8K followed by 15 on the Hunsrueck.

It shaved this morning, but its still pulling little more than I would like in the denser areas of my beard.

What should I try next? Should I go to the green paste? Should I do a few more laps on the Hunsrueck? Back to the 8K? I have diomond paste and boron carbide available too. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have had the same trouble with my Friodur, it turned out that the bevel at the toe had become rounded so that the part of the bevel furthest away from the spine did not even make contact with the hone.

Best thing to find out whether this is the problem is to take a felt tip and draw transverse lines on the blade, 1/2 to 3/4" apart that also cover the entire bevel. Then start honing on whatever hone for about ten laps, then take a magnifying glass and check if all the ink on the bevel is gone. If not, that part of the bevel never touches the hone. In that case you need to go back to a coarser hone and improve the bevel and check again every so often with new transverse marks.

I found this more helpful than studying the shape of the bevel under a mike.

I find it best to send it back to altima55 and pay the 15.00.

    Good luck.

Just to save you some metal - on the 4K you don't need 10 laps to see what's going on with the bevel / marks: 1-3 laps are enough in my experience.

Not that I am that anal for 7 more laps - but you do lose *some* metal and you *may* get close to overhoning (I find the fear of overhoning is worse than the problem itself; I remember dealing with only 1 overhoned edge so far, and can't recollect if I did it or it came to me this way from someone and I must say it wasn't too hard to correct)

My Friodur takes a little bit more to hone than my others - sometimes a teeny little bit more pressure can help in the early stages, followed by a fair few more strokes (say 1.2 to 1.5 times as many as a carbon steel) on the 8K side of the Norton.
