Bevel angels?
Apologies as I can't seem to recall or find accurate info about it atm,
Which bevel angels are good for shaving? I thought anything from 9 - 22 degrees. (I don't think too low angles were very good at edge holding IIRC)
A friend of mine gave me a razor to sharpen and he used couple of layers of tape on his wedge, but after measuring with tape his angle is 24° in some parts of the razor
that seemed a little steep and he created a secondary bevel at this angle, so I gotta know if I have to hone it out or not
Thanks in advance fellas!Last edited by TristanLudlow; 03-04-2018 at 02:53 PM.

I've heard 15-17 is right there, all you have to do is a few laps and you will change he angle pretty quick, reduce the tape by 1 and look at it. Tc. As to honing it out, shave with it and see

Thanked: 3227I have read that 17 degrees is what is aimed for with a tolerance of +/- 2 degrees.

Thanked: 634Generally if you lay the razor flat on the stone the angle is formed by the contact points of the edge and spine. That leaves no guesswork.

Thanked: 246Wish I had a bevel angel. That's like a guardian angel but for honing, right?
With respect to angles, it's pretty uncommon to find a razor that can hold a good edge under 14° and the high end is wherever it gets uncomfortable for your face. I've shaved with edges up to 30° with no issues, though they don't shave as close.

Thanked: 3227I use the bevel angle calculator download contained here http://coticule.be/wedges.html to help get me into the 17 degree +/- 2 degrees ball park. It is easy enough to use and close enough for government work.
