I use the Coticule after the Norton 8K and think of it as a progression not a substitute. The norton is more important to have. The coticule comes next.

The feedback I have received since I started to sell Mueller Thuringers is their grit sizes are somewhere between the coticule and Eschers. Personally I cannot feel much difference between edges done with any of the three mentioned. But I am not as experienced a honemeister as many members here.

It all depends on what you want to do. a 4x8 is a very good stone. I use one regularly. coticules are also good stones, and I also use one regularly.

But for a graduation gift, I'd ask them to contact Robert Williams and give them a short list of requirements. (If they could afford it of course)
