Do new stones / nawina require lapping or do they come with a factory edge that is suitable for honing?

They will need a bit of lapping, but as said W/D sandpaper on a flat surface is more than adequate.

    Outback,

Is that offer of hands on training extended to other forum members? If so, what is your favorite beer, alcohol, and/or lunch option?

Ohh my, alcohol and really sharp objects! Count me in!

Also thanks to everyone. I have this inbound form Japan:
    - NANIWA: Goken-PRO Kagayaki Whetstone # 12000 sharpening [NK-2091]

Seems that it is the 12k SD only less expensive.
