Default Nagura Stone on the 4k Side?

Anyone create a slurry on the 4k side of their Norton with a Nagura stone? If so, what have the results been? Is there any obvious reason why one would NOT do this?

    thanks

yes i do that. nagura on 4kside. i don't use it on the 8k or chinesse 12k.. only the 4k.

i feel it makes the stone cut faster. so i do it when im initially honing up a restoration/ebay purchase. i use it till i feel i got a bevel established.. then go wash off the stone and the razor... then start my pyramids without any slurry.

The Norton 4K is a very fast cutter. I can't imagine why someone would use slurry on that stone. usually within a few strokes you have a slurry caused by the metal being removed anyway. Its usually on the finer stones that you would use a slurry stone such as the 12K Chinese or japanese stones. Some use slurry on the coticule also. Of course if slurry on the 4K works well for you then there's nothing wrong with it for you, but for most folks I think its a no-no.

About the only time I would use a slurry on the 4K is when I am trying to remove a visible nick in the edge. Once that is gone then remove the slurry to develop a very good bevel.

    Default Nagura on Norton

I wouldn't recommend doing this but try it for yourself to see what happens. Nagura is chalk and chalk will clog the pores of an artificial stone like the Norton. Nagura is properly used on Japanese hard substrate waterstones to build a lubricating slurry (not an abrasive slurry as with the Belgians).
