Thread: Bevel pics

I notice lots of small black spots on the bevel . Rust pits ? If so has the edge chipped out at the red arrows in the pic ?
If so this is a good example of how rust can still compromise a "restored" blade.
If the spots are dust or skin cells carry on.

I noticed this too. But if you look at approximately the same distance from the center on the other side there are spots too. Not as big. I think this is distortion from my cheap-ass scope. But i will give it another look. Thanks for noticing and pointing it out. I had forgotten i wanted to look at that again.

Just got home and had another look at that spot. There are a couple scratches right there and the spots are where the scratches meet the edge. I looked at the edge closer and I'm seeing a few spots along the edge that are not as good as I thought. This one will need to be done again. But I will give it a test shave in the morning anyway. They might not be bad enough to feel.

One more pics. I think I've done pretty well with this one. But now I'm starting to see reflection at the edge. White line! Although when looking down on the edge I'm only seeing tiny spots, I think they are lint and such. The edge is keen with the TPT. Won't know till I shave with it I guess. The line on the bevel are from my strp i guess as i hadnt seen them before stropping



BTW, I did test shave two of the razors I did the other night. SMOOOOTH and keen was the word of the day. They both felt like they were wiping the whiskers from my face, not cutting them off. And it felt like it wasn't sharp at all. That was an odd feeling for me. Guess I'm starting to know how and edge should feel when done well. OK, Done closer to the way it should feel. Ha.

It’s hard to say for sure, because the scratches change a little with the light, but it appears that your stray scratches are only along the edge and not the shoulder. Off hand I think that could be from changes in torque as in you are using less torque with your finishing stroke or you need a fresh piece of tape.

What I noticed with those scratches, are they go the other direction. Being left-handed, all my stria goes the other way. UNLESS I'm spine leading like on a strop. This is my therory anyway.

And just because, Here is a Jnat edge. I think I got lucky on this one...


Looks like a very straight edge. Now, as long as I got the bevel set right in the beginning, this should shave well.

Light shining off the edge will give the illusion of a secondary bevel sometimes & stropping also accentuates it.
If it shaves ok ~ it is ok

A lefty, huh? Just kidding, Jerry. Those last pics are looking great, especially considering the extreme level of magnification compared to a typical loupe.
