    Freehand,
    It must be simple and quick or you will not do it as frequently as necessary.

    Rob freehands a skewed chisel blade here, Similar to an angled skiver, but the technique is the same with a straight chisel. 1k Diamond plate and 16k Shapton. Honing starts at about 1.55.

    I do 1k diamond plate, Lilly White Ark and strop on .25 Diamond or Chrome Oxide. Stropping frequently on a pasted paddle strop negates the need to go to the stones for along time and maintains a keen, clean cutting edge.

    Freehand honing takes minutes, start to finish. And the bevel is so wide it is easy to learn.
