If you got a (rare) natural two-sided yellow and blue, the blue side is coarser. If you got a conventional yellow coticule, it's bonded to a piece of slate, which is not intended for honing at all.

I am almost sure that you have a normal coticule with the slate base (not used for honing). Natural stones with both yellow and blue are VERY rare and unless you were specifically told that this is what you bought (and paid more) I don't think that your stone is a natural. It looks like you got a nice thick piece of yellow coticule though.

If the blue is kinda speckled then it is a natural stone of about 4000 grit. The yellow/cream side is about 8-10,000 grit and is used as a finishing stone.

    Default Side Shot

A picture of one side of your stone would help clarify the issue.

Definetly the yellow side is the one to use!

I have never seen or heard/read of a blue coticule glued to a yellow slate or whatever else.

What makes me suspicious is the thickness of the yellow coticule?!?!
Could you post the measurements of that thing?

Usually it´s said that the thicker the yellow side is, the lower is the quality of it as a hone?!?!

I've never heard it put it that way, but generally the better pieces come from the smaller/thinner veins of rock
