Not really. That is not bread knifing, it is jointing. Bread knifing is multiple back and forth strokes with some pressure, done to reprofile an edge, as in chip removal, edge reshaping, remove a frown, make a smile or straight edge.

Jointing is a single, two or three lite strokes on the face or edge of the stone to straighten an edge and remove the flashing/ burr or micro chip. It is done once the bevels are already flat and in the correct plane, so that the bevels can easily be brought back to meeting. With a little practice you can feel the chips hit the corner of the stone and tell if you need another. Magnification can confirm.

I is a very practical technique and part of every honing I do, often at each stone and especially at bevel set and the finish stone.

At the finish stone, I joint the edge once the razor is fully honed, the very edge is removed with one very lite stroke, it is cut off as opposed to rolling on glass. The bevels are brought back to meeting in 3-15 lite laps. Now, that may be a bit advanced, as very lite pressure is used for the entire process.

But jointing at 1k is basic honing, and should be done to make a straighter and stronger edge. The difference is, honing to an already straight edge, as opposed to honing to a straight edge. Honing to an edge is much easier and more effective.

One of the things I like about Joseph’s videos is that he works very clean. Many overlook the problems of honing on equipment that is loaded with swarf of unknown grit on the stone, holder and platform, then wonder why they have issues.

I was honing last night and listening to some honing videos on YouTube, it/he was transparent & cringe worthy . I think some people wanna be revered .. No one on this forum.

True this. I remember at a meetup years ago hanging out with a legendary SRP honer and rock-hound. I learned some things from him, but his water-hones hones were a mess of swarf and tape residue. Hopefully he cleaned them after the meet lol.
