Thread: Dovo’s honing method

So I stumbled upon Dovo’s website and noticed they have new pages that provide more detail on how their razors are honed.

They claim to use a 1k,5k,8k,10k followed iron oxide paste. The pictures however show a yellow hone ( coticule?) and what looks like a Thuringian.

Additionally, the yellow hone looks convex.

It almost seems like they used stock photos that don't match their text? Weird. And this is zoomed in on the yellow hone: I don't think it just looks convex... yikes.

I don’t think I’d want to ask him about straight razor shaving.

My guess is that the guy designing the web site is not the same guy who is honing the razors. Having spent 20+ years in manufacturing facilities, what happens on the floor isn't necessarily what the world sees or even what the guy in the front office sees.

Don't they always need honing out of the box anyway?

I once convexed a coticule for experiments sake. It’s a good way of ensuring your entire edge is in contact with the hone. But if you know what you are doing, as in, know how to adjust your stroke depending on the blade and perform a rolling x-stroke, then it is not necessary.

Having a narrow hone for the problem spots is also very handy.
