    Default Chipped Blade

I was going through my selection of razors that I had stashed in the event of an "acquisitional dry spell" and found this little Hess. "This looks like a great razor," I thought, "just a little honing and it should be fine."

After a closer inspection, I found this......

"Well, crap," I thought. "I've never had to hone out a chip before." So begins a new experience.........

After a little time and the old standard of 1k/4k/8k Norton finished off on the 12k Nani, things look a whole lot better!

Thanks. It wasn't something I had dealt with before but not anything especially difficult. Perusing a few old threads and Glen's video helped. Thanks for the link.

Yea, it’s a chip, but nothing that a 1k bevel set would not remove. Probably chipped, when it was honed on a very low grit stone, based on the looks of the aggressive spine wear stria.

    Nice razor, great shavers.

They were likely made for Hess, by Anton Wingan, who probably made the Ducks and razors for Bresnick and others. He also made razor under Wingan, Clauberg and Othello all of which have similarities to Ducks and Brummel.

Based on the blade design and grind, identical to a Double Duck and the Scale, color/ pattern, and the bolsters. Wingan was known for his bolstered razor and impeccable hollow grinds.

Probably why they are such good shavers. Enjoy.

Thanks for the info. Now that I think about it, it does resemble my Duck in performance.
