    As an after thought and iirc, a 17 degree bevel angle is the target standard leaving the factory with a plus/minus of 2 degrees tolerance either side of that. If you are within that range you are good to go. Someone correct me if I am wrong though.

    This is a pretty good idea. I do know that I have been hard on a spine or two.

    It has always struck me as a little silly to use tape on vintage razors, which clearly were not designed to be sharpened with tape. However, "because you're not competent yet" is the best justification for doing so that I've heard so far, so I may have to rethink my position a little.
