Thanked: 0Awesome - thanks!
And yes, I mean a wedge with no hollow.
I've never tried sharpening one of those before!
Aha - I see - Phil doesn't do Wedges. So the quest continues! Still, it's good to have more options for every instance!
Thanks!Last edited by skald; 02-11-2022 at 09:01 PM.

Thanked: 3222They made very few true wedges so to find two is uncommon. When you get them lay a straight edge from spine to bevel just to if there is any light between it and the blade. If they are true wedges you are going to have to figure a way to widen the spine enough to to hone normally and get a proper bevel angle. It could mean using a slip on false spine just for honing.

Thanked: 0Huh. Had not thought of a slip on spine. Cool thought.
If these turn out to be near wedges instead of true wedges, would you suggest the same thing?
One last stupidly obvious question; since I've only ever honed razors using the spine as a guide, I have no idea what the ideal blade angle is. Is there a quick answer to that, or is that something I will need to delve into?
I'll do some research!
I wonder what they did when those were in vogue? Some kind of jig would make sense, but I wonder if it was just freehand.
Thanks again for all of your help.

The math is out there to find out the angle. Mine is built into my spreadsheet so i cant jelp with that. Bit i bet you have near hollows. Ive never seen a full wedge. Not that i dont think they exist. The odds are very slim.
If you can het Rez to hone for ya you will be happy. But his work schedule is worse than mine. And Im a damn truck driver! It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4824True story. 21 days straight, then 21 off. I always wind up doing side work on my days off though.

If you want another honing contact, get Outback into you address book. Mike is in Ohio and can make an edge that'll frighten you.

Spine thickness/Active width X 57.3 Degrees = Inclusive bevel angle.

Thanked: 4824Victor is pretty crazy on the geometry math.
Also, people that are new to honing razors tend to be very heavy on the spine, leading to unneeded wear, which in turn messes with the geometry. When I started honing razors I was told the best rule of thumb to prevent this was to hone with tape until I got the technique dialled in well enough that I could hone a razor without wearing the tape. So far I have killed zero razors and can hone without wearing out my tape. If asked for a tape free honing, and a bevel set is needed, I set the bevel with tape, drop the tape, a few strokes to correct for the loss of tape and progress through. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Thanked: 3222No, I would not recommend the same thing on a near wedge. You should be able to get by with tape in layers. I have a spread sheet somewhere where you just plug in the dimensions, spine width and blade size, and it will tell you what the bevel angle is without tape. It will also show you what the bevel angle would be if you use one,two or three layers of tape. I'll see if I can dig it up later.
