DMT D8E good for Norton lapping?
The thread title says it all. Having gotten a little carried away on ebay, I'm convinced I need the the DMT 1200 grit hone. Also, I hate lapping the Norton on sandpaper. Would the DMT 1200 work to lap the Norton, or would I be better off getting the Norton Flattening stone?

Steve,
I think the 1200 might work. I used to lap my Norton with a Norton 1K, and it worked well.
The only trouble with the 1200 is that it can develop a strong suction when used to lap another hone. With the Norton this may not be as much of an issue as with barber hones.
Give it a shot and let us know. You won't hurt anything either way.

I use my D8C 320 to lap my 8k norton to get a nice smooth flatening. As you flaten with finer grit stones the time and wear change. I start with the D8XX till the stone is just to the flat point, than finish with the D8C. This reduces the wear on all stones in question.

Thanks, Josh and DC. Any thoughts on which would flatten the Norton faster?
I'm trying to decide whether to pull the trigger on both at the same time, or just the DMT now and the Norton later, if the DMT doesn't work well. If I get them both at the same time, obviously, I'd save on shipping costs, so
Incidentally, in case others are interested, I came across a place selling the 325, 600, and 1200 grit 8x3 DMT hones for $35: www.craftsmanstudio.com. They also have the 8000 grit version for $63.

My vote would actually go to the DMT 325 over the Norton flattening stone. I haven't used the Norton FS, but the DMT will allow you to flatten anything--barber hones, Nortons, coticules--AND hone knives.
Just my 2 cents...
