How does one max out a stone?
What is your method for maxing out a stone?
I just bought the Naniwa progression, 1-3-5-8-12 K. So far the edges are good. Previously I have used film to do my honing for over 10 years. Typically I would hone all of my razors at one time. I got a couple of questions:
How do you do your shave test after honing:
Do you do your progression and then shave, if not up to par do go back to the hones and then use the same razor again for the next shave? Or, do you do a partial shave and then add more laps if needed? I have always used my arm, belly hair as a final test by trying to shave off the hair 1/4 to 1/8 inch above the skin which has been a decent level check. I am not sure I could shower, start a shave, and rehone while still waiting to finish the shave.
Do you hone one razor at a time?
I normally hone all my razors at a time (around 12 or so). Would it be better to dial in one razor at a time?
Should I shave off of multiple stones?
Should I shave after the 8K just to see the results then go back to the 8K to see if I can make improvements to the edge before moving onto the 12K?

This is the best learning experience you might get
We have done the 1k shave challenges a few times over the years, to then extend that and do a "Shave Challenge" at each step up the ladder really gives you an idea of what you can get
Hone
Strop 20 laps on plain leather
Test Shave"No amount of money spent on a Stone can ever replace the value of the time it takes learning to use it properly"
