But even a yellow coticule can be used to get rid of deep nicks.

Thanked: 10I use the 4000 to set a bevel or to hone out chips or nicks in an old razor, but if you have a smiling blade with a nick (needs only x motion and not circular) the work on the 4000 is very time consuming.
For this situation you need a fast cutting stone like the diamond 1200.
I have a 220/1000 but I dont like it

Thanked: 0Thank you everybody. There is a lot of information here and I am having trouble deciding exactly what to get, so I think I am just going to order this set for $135 http://www.ptreeusa.com/norton_waterstone.htm . Seems like a great value......someone stop me if I should go another route.
Remember, I want to do basic honing as well as fixing chips and eventually graduate into restoring poorly kept razors.
