    Default which stone

Which grit stone would be the best to have for honing very dull razors (ie you can run your finger on the edge) but that do not have significant nicks or chips (I tend to stay away from such a razor)

Usually, 1000 grit is recommended to removed nicks and chips, but what if the razor only needs to have the bevel set. Would a slightly finer stone, say a 1500 or 2000 grit, be better suited to the task?

Intuition tells me you want to keep your razors off coarser stones as much as possible

I'm leaning towards the 1500 grit. Seems like it would be a balance between cutting speed and not being excessively coarse

If you have a 1500 handy, go for it. I use a 1200 King if all I need to do it set a bevel only. If it needs major grinding I hit the 320 DMT... I don't have anything between them yet.

I go from 1200 to the 4/8k and so on.
