    Default Norton hone minor imperfections?

    Hi there,
I just recently ordered a norton 4k8k hone online. when i opened it, there was a slight chip from the 8k surface on the edge, but perfect otherwise, and on the 4k side there are two very slight 'crators' or indents. Is this normal? does the hone need to be lapped first?

    Cheers,

The hone does need to be lapped (if it's like mine was), but the chip and crators are not normal. This is not a natural stone, so there's no reason it shouldn't be undamaged.

hmm right. What do you suggest i do? the two crators on the 4k side are about 2mm wide, one is directly in the centre. they are very shallow. the chip is off the shorter edge of the 8k, measuring about 1cm by 3mm.
    Thanks,

Based on your description I doubt that it will be a problem and will lap out over time anyway. I've wittled away most of my first Norton and am on my second.

Its likely you can avoid the spot altogether and even if you don't I can't imagine much of a problem.

You should lap it first to make sure its a smooth spot though.
