dinged up wapii
well I left my 9/16 wapi on towel in the bathroom and what do you know. It fell on the floor open. Got itself a nice chip and a ding. Not sure how to attack this one as the blade looks like it may have been dinged up pretty good. What is good plan of attack
MY tool are a norton combo 4/8 and sandpaper. Not much help there but it is all I have besides a pasted paddle and swaty hone. who wants to be the first one to help me fix a razor??
thanks

My plan of attack would be as follows:
- Windows PC, preferably XP2
- Wireless router
- www.ebay.com
- Buy another!
Of course, if you're into restoration then most likely the above doesn't apply.

Need a diamond stone for that problem
Ouch! That hurts. Sorry to hear about the blade getting dinged up. I know what that feels like! To fix it will require more than a Norton 4k8k and sandpaper. First, check to see if it's straight or not. It may have also gotten a bend or twist in it. Second, post a picture so I can see where it got dinged. I have bought razors with a chunk broken out of the toe end and just ground them back (I make knives so I have all of that machinery) and made a shorter razor. I've also very carefully tapped the blade back into alignment with a copper hammer on a precision flat surface and then reground.
A DMT Extra Fine 1200 continuous diamond stone will take small nicks and microchips out of an edge and then you move on to a 4000 and 8000 and then strop. Depending on how bad it is, it may take some time to fix.

Matt,
The weapon of choice in this situation would be the DMT. You could even use a 320-grit if you've purchased one--I remember you mentioning you were considering it.
Sandpaper will work, but it will take some time. If the nick is deeper than the bevel, you might want to go to a coarse wet/dry sandpaper like 600-grit. Tape the spine and do normal X strokes. Replace the paper and tape regularly.
An advanced technique is to raise the spine and grind off the bevel--and the deep chips along with it. The trouble with this is that it will take forever to reestablish the bevel, especially without a DMT.
You'll learn a lot about honing on this one. Be patient; you don't have anything to loose at this point.

Thanked: 9I'd use diamond too.
But before I had it - I've done Dremmel That is brutal
Sandpaper would still work, in my experience. Use the razor to learn, if you are interested and willing to invest the efforts. Otherwise - it makes more sense to just go get another one.
Cheers

dovo screwed up now
You arent going to believe this. I repated the same incident with my Dovo today while getting ready to test shave it before selling it. The chip is enourmous I definitley do not have the tools to fix it. I don't know if it is even repairable. That is like 50 bucks down the drain. I will post pics of it so you can see if it is worth trying to fix or if it a parts razor now.
What a bummer.

Well I was going to post "I bet that you won't be making that mistake again"....but now I will have to post "I hope that you won't be making that mistake three times". On a positive note, at least it was not a more expensive razor.

Thanked: 0If you want to work the chip out....get a set of diamond sharpening hones off of harbor freight. Put some masking tape over the spine of the blade and you can use the course hone to rough it out. Then you can work up through the medium and fine. After that I would hit it with 600 wet paper and 1000 wet paper (you can get it at the local auto parts store). From there go back at with the 4000 and 8000 grit. It will take a while but it will come out.
I just looked and harbor freight is selling a 4 sided diamond hone for $14.99 that covers 200, 300, 400 and 600. I use these for gunsmithing work and the cut very well...The hone are in a block and they are 2 inch by 6 inch...

Thanked: 9WOW - 200 is mighty rough - I think you won't even get a smooth edge with it
I don't remember if I have ever gone that low...
Best of luck!
