How to rehone a Stainless steel DOVO?
Hi,
this morning I unfortunately ruined the blade of my Lynn's honed DOVO.
I touched the border of the sink with the blade while rinsing the razor and now in the middle of the blade there is a little "M", I had to finish my shave with a DE.
Now, I need to re-hone the dovo, I'm not bound to get a perfect hone as Lynn did, but I'd love any suggestion from Lynn or any other experienced honer here.
As said the razor is a Stainless steel dovo, I was wondering if a progression like 5-5, 3-5,1-3,1-7 could be enough for this blade. (I'm using a norton 4000/8000).
Any help would be welcome
Bye--

Thanked: 4942Bummer Diego,
Give the progression you mentioned a try and let us know. On the last two intead of the 1-3, try a 1-5 before the 1-7.
Good Luck.

Great!
Thank you Lynn.
I'll go for 5-5, 3-5,1-5,1-7 so.
I'll be home in 3 or 4 hour and than I'll try. I'll let you know...--

It is worth a try, and if Lynn says to go for it then go for it; however, from my experience I highly doubt that this will be enough to fix a damaged edge. Without seeing the razor I would say that you will have to re-establish a bevel (without damage) and polish it which can be a fair amount of work. Good luck.

and if/when that happens you could just repeat the pyramid again.

I just finished re-honing the dovo, I'm now unable to feel the damage running the blade edge over my nail. I also did a 60 pass on the strop, tomorrow morning I'll try to shave after a few more stropping, I'll let you know how it is.
heavydutysg135: The damage wasn't really that bad, but enough to slice my face if I'd continued shaving. Fortunately i just lightly touched the sink border. Well, tomorrow I'll know the truth... if my face won't be sliced I'd at least recovered the damage, but I doubt I'd been able to get a perfect honing as the one Lynn gave to my razor... sigh I'd just started to have good shaves without nicks and cuts...--

Thanked: 0Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it.
Remember, you're upwards on the learning curve.
It took me a couple of years, but now I'm having fun when I'm finished doing a standing hair test and for fun take out a little slice of a hair. Just scoop out a little part

Ok, just finished shaving.
The blade is recovered, and I have a smooth enough shave. I can feel, nevertheless, that the blade seems to glide less than before, I'd probably need to strop on linen, if only USPS wouldn't have lost my Tony's strops....
Well, I just gave other 50 passes on the leather strop and tomorrow I'l gave other 50 before shaving, I hope that could be enough to smooth the blade.
I'll let you know--
