Thanked: 0honing stone what do you think of this deal
hi all
well I have surfed the net for honing stones and the price in the uk for Norton stones 200/1000 & 4000/8000 plus a Flattening Stone would run to around £100 - £120 ($220 - $250 ) if brought individualy. afterl looking on the forum some one spoke about getting them from the link below http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=18067 the cost including delivery to my address would be around £78 ($158) for ther starter kit which includes all the above stones. my questions are
1- is this a good kit to start honing with (remember I am a total novice)
2- are they a good company to deal with
any advice or recomendations from members would be most welcome or if any UK members of the forum know of any dealers in the UK please let me know
regard

Thanked: 9Price seems great but why did you buy all of them? the 200/1000 is only needed for really hardcore jobs... I remember Bill Ellis telling people to leave these to the "big boys" (not that I myself listened )
4K/8K is really all you need to maintain a good blade in great condition, maybe with some Chromium and newspaper to finish off
Cheers

I agree with Izlat the norton 200/1000 stone if very very aggressive its only used for extreme restorations. I use a slower cutting Suehiro 1k for establishing a bevel and removing large chips.

Thanked: 6I recently bought Rockler's 220/1k, 4k/8k and flattening stone kit - it arrived securely padded and packed. You *will* need to flatten the stones before use, however.

also be aware of the customs charge and the handling fee charged by those nice people at HM customs & revenue & parcelforce.
i bought a $50 razor and had to pay £12.94 charge on it but i didnt mind as it was still a good buy,but you should weigh up the figures before you buy
