what type of hone is this
alright. so i took a chance on an ebay listing. i was hoping that it might be a yellow coticule or even a yellow/green escher. when i got it i had to clean it up a bit. it was a tad concave from use which i flattened out. besides that the edges are nice, no chips anywhere.
the folks with coticules, is there any way to tell what type of stone it is. any dead give aways that would help?
stone is 6x2 1/4. light yellow/creamish tan. has a couple of inclusions on it but none on the top surface. these inclusions are darker brown in colour and are seen on the sides of the stone. small specs, maybe 1/2 the size of a piece of rice or less. one side has about 4/5 of them and the other side 2. the bottom surface has a larger kinda half inclusion which would be the same brownish colour but its almost mixed into the normal colour of the stone. its not "solid" looking more of a swirlish.
to the touch, the grit feels more smooth then my 8k norton but less smooth then my chinesse 12k.
thanks,

Did it lap pretty easily? If it laps easily and leaves a milky slurry, you probably have a coticule. If you have access to a microscope, put some of the slurry on a slide. You're looking for red garnets.
Now that I see your photos, I really think that's a coticule. The eBay shots made it look like a mustard yellow. The smoothness and the swirly pattern sounds right. It's cool that it's not mounted to a slate back; this will make it more delicate, though, so be careful with it.
Good snag!

I bet coticule!
Wet the stone and do a few passes with a razor to see if you can raise a slurry. If you do raise a slurry, take a look at it through a microscope and you should see red shiny dots! those would be garnets which would confirm that your stone is, indeed a coticule!
