First Time Honing Tonight
I did manage to get the new Wapi so I could shave comfortably with it....so that was pretty cool.
However; I see under the scope that my edge is not the same width across the length of the blade. It is really nice to be able to see the edge under magnification as you go.
Can someone recommend a good hand held 30x loupe ? The Radio Shack microscope is not the simplest to fool with.
I found that I was getting the most consistent passes up and down the stone by using a finger. Should I not do this? Will I ruin the potential to get better if I do this?
Boy that 8k Norton and Yellow C really polished things up pretty quickly.

Thanked: 351Congrats on getting the hones going... glad to hear it's working for you. I wanted to use an extra finger in the beginning but I worked at trying to do things one handed, just because of the potential for putting too much pressure on the blade with that finger. Lots of ebay razors show the negative effects of such honing. Still, if you keep the touch light and watch for the tell tale signs, you're probably fine.
http://www.widgetsupply.com/ has a couple of 30x loupes listed in their jewelers tools section, I'm thinking of getting one myself but I have have seen the single lens type on ebay as well for a buck or two but seeing I didn't order one it must have been the shipping charge. Then again, I live in Canada which sometimes makes a big difference in shipping.
Regards
Christian

Thanked: 2209Do not worry about the differences in the width of the bevel. They can be caused by a couple of things and the Wapis can have a very slight warp in the blade that would cause that to happen.

I have a 30x loupe and this 30x Chinese microscope and the microscope works much better with the bright led light that is built in. I has a focus that works very well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300189643135&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=020
