    Awsome thread by the way.

Of someone starting out, what would you say is an absolute must have stone if you only had one? I know that this is more than likely a matter of opinion, but I just dont feel I need 5 or 6 stones just to keep my razor in shaveing condition.

    Thanks.

If you only had to have one I bet most of the members here with more experience then I have would recommend a Norton 4/8 combo. If you wanted a Belgian Coticule then a natural with the blue being approximately a 4 and the yellow an 8. The natural would be quite a bit more expensive. I really like the Norton 4/8 and from what I have read it is thought by most to be an ideal stone to learn on.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanks Jimmy. Thats the theme I am starting to see when looking back thru all the "honeing" threads. Looks like that might be my next purchase.

I think Jimmy is absolutely right, that's the advice I got when I started honing and once mastered the Norton 4/8 is a great tool. After you have the hang of them I have found that when I use a combo bout I get much faster results, and smoother. I use the BBW with the 4000,and the yellow with the 8000,you can see the difference within a minute as the steel is seen in the slurry, just thin it out as you grit to the finish and the results are better then either by them selves. It has to be a coticule. Even if you wanted something even finer, you could do a few lapes with a pasted strop after the coticule.

I agree with Marcus here. If you really had to have only one stone to maintain edges that don't need any more serious work, a Belgian combo or even a coticule IMO would be better than a Norton 4000/8000. The 8000 side of that stone can make a shaving edge, but an edge most would say is lacking something.

Or to put it another way, it's a fact that many more people say they're happier with a yellow coticule shaving edge than a Norton 8000 shaving edge.

Damn right! I would say my coticule is light years better than my Norton 8K. Seriously.
