So, I ordered the wrong Norton...
I had ordered a 4/8k Norton, and waited for it to arrive. Well today it did. But after opening the package adn looking at the side, I see:
1000K / 4000K on the side.
I think I made a mistake at some point. So my question is should I bother keeping this one, or send it back and get the 4/8k???

Thanked: 13226The 1000 Norton is a bevel setting monster (on problem razors) and the 4000 is the one you will wear out the fastest so perhaps you might have put it together the right way, if you are going to keep 2 stones.... I have the 220/1k and the 4k/8k and I have yet to use the 220 even for a knife.....
I just spent my 2 cents

What are your plans with straight razors?
If you're going to be buying them up
on ebay and restoring them, then having
that setup is smart, as well as adding
the 8k. If it's just to keep an edge on your
straights then you should go with the
4k/8k combo. Just my two cents.

Keep everything
Dont get rid of anything you acquire for straight razor shaving. Just keep adding to the collection. Sooner or later you are going to need that stone along with about 7 more. As soon as you get rid of that 1k/4k you are going to buy a Ebay "deal" and wish to God above you had it back. The only thing you want to get rid of is a razor you are ready to pass on to the next newbie or RAD addict. To summarize, dont get rid of anything, build that addition to the house and start filling it.

For restoration and repair the 1000 is awsome. Please keep it for emergencies.
I wish I had separate blocks rather than a 4/8 (combo). With a 4/8 You end up turning it over and re-wetting between pyramids. I don't like this.
You can get a 8k or Coticule or both. I have frequently gone straight to the coticule after 4k work. Best wishes. MikeB

Cool, thanks guys. I have been thinking of trying a few razors from scratch. I have made a few larger blades, and have access to a full tech school of equipment. LOL So I think I will keep it and then just get an 8000k stone.
CNC Straight Razor anyone? I have to try it.
Does anyone know where I can get one for less that $30?

Thanked: 150Less than $30 is unlikely, unless it's really used. better off to just save a bit and go for the gusto.

Would either of these work?

I might be able to get a better one later on, but with just having spent $75 on the wrong stone. LOL You see my problem.

Can't tell you about the 8K, but I just
recently bought the Chinese 12k based
on the recommendations of many
people here.

Thanked: 2204After you use the 4K then you need to go to either a 6k or an 8K. If you bypass those and try to jump to the chinese 12K you will be very frustrated. It is a slowwwww cutting finishing stone.
That 8K might be ok but you will be taking a chance. If you do then be sure and get a slurry stone, it may be required to make that 8k work. Be sure and verify that point.
The Norton's do not require a slurry stone.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
