Thanked: 0Bevel Size
Do wider blades typically have larger (wider) bevels than thinner blades? For example should the bevel on an 8/8 1/4 hollow W&B have a larger or similar bevel width as that on a 5/8 full hollow Dovo classic? Does it matter? Can anyone work stropping into this conversation?

I think wider blades should have thinner bevels. Its a simple triangle. Spine width, bevel width. Greater width of spine should equal thinner bevel. Ofcourse I suppose the hollow limits the potentional bevel width.
Stropping uses the same bevel and angles. It uses whatever you've got. I don't think wider bevels mean a sharper edge, or vice a versa. As long as the standard 15-17 degree angle is maintained you'd be okay. There are limits though, I suppose.
I don't think it matters too much.
I do create wider bevels, but I think I only do that for effect.Last edited by AFDavis11; 02-08-2008 at 01:45 AM.

Thanked: 1587I think spine thickness plays a role too - my larger blades have thicker spines than my smaller blades which presumably keeps the angle of the blade in the acceptable range. There was a thread a while back on the geometry of the razor angle....hang on, I'll go find it..........

There it is: http://straightrazorpalace.com/showthread.php?t=11472
Of course, hone wear on the spine can influence the angle, which in turn can influence the bevel width (as can the grind of the razor).

Thanked: 335Dam, my bevel is wider
Taz,
I think the reason for this is that the area of blade including what will become the bevel is protected during the acid etch which brings out the welded pattern. The coating of wax or whatever is there to prevent too much etch at the thin edge which may make for some holes at that very delicate section. What you are seeing is probably not the bevel, rather it's that unetched swath along the bottom of the blade.
