Any info on what this is? or isn't?
Found this at an antique store for $3. Any idea what type of Hone? I know they are many. Or maybe what we can rule out to narrow it down, so I will have a clue how I can use it. Its grey, 3"x4"x 1/2"

It is difficult to say from the pictures, does it look/feel like a natural stone. If you clean it then you would probably get a better idea. Howard is really the expert on hones so maybe he could give you a better idea of what you have. Best case scenaro would be some type of Thuringen/Escher but it is likely some type of synthetic barber hone. I can at least tell you with a high level of certainty that it is NOT a coticule

My vote is for a Barber Hone. Not sure what kind. Looks like I can see the center "seam" between the two halves.
Probably a great buy at $3!

Thanked: 335Then again it could be a chunk of memorabilia from the slate chalkboard from someone's dearly beloved kindergarten classroom circa the turn of the last century.
It's really difficult to figure it out from a fuzzy picture.

it does
resemble a black chalk board. its very smooth. I looked on ebay at hones and it seemed to resemble a Dura-hone and a Carborundum?
