Default Finishing stone vs yellow coticule

Hi everyone, I was thinking of starting with honing seeing as I'm miles from everyone else and saw the finishing stone on classicshaving, is the 12000 grit finishing stone better/worse/same as the yellow coticule? The main reason I am looking at getting the 4k/8k and a polishing stone at the same time is to save on postage really, (NZ is half a world away and I'm a poor student beginning to be afflicted by RAD I browse antique shops now...) Also does anyone know the dimensions of the polishing stone?

Just a little correction! The yellow coticule is a finishing stone, and although it is only rated at 8000 grit it is said to effectively polish in the 10 to 12000 grit range due to the shape of the garnets which are the coticules cutting / polishing agent! As for the Chinese 12k, I know nothing.

Have you tried Smith's, Mitre 10 or Hammer hardware for a 4/8k? Years ago I picked up a low grit Norton from Hammer hardware, so it may be worth seeing if they could get you a higher grit one. Some members here only use the 4/8 without any other hones, so that could be a fine way to save you some $$$.

    man the NZD blows eh.

I'll have a hunt in a mitre10, NZD isn't too bad at the moment really, quite strong against USD so buying stuff from there isn't too bad just postage kills really

    Hey Shimmy,

I have had a look everywhere here in Wellington (Mitre 10, Bunnings etc) with no luck on finding a decent stone and recently brought a norton 4/8k in from the US, which I am having some success with.

Of course now I want a coticule as well. Dam this HAD kicks in fast!!!
