Hone Smells
I got my hone a few days ago, and help wonder why it smells like formaldehyde or formalin...anyone else experience this?

You didn't say what kind of hone you have. Natural rock hones have a, well, rock smell to them thats natural. Synthetic hones should not have any smell. Maybe if its a combo hone the glue used to attach the pieces maybe, I don't know.

Beats me...I just don't see why it would smell like preservative...maybe it's made in the same factory where they preserve little things for biology class

Thanked: 1587Formaldehyde kills most bacteria (and fungi??) doesn't it? Maybe someone decided to give your hone a dip to be on the safe side before sending it?

Stone holder? I just bought the 4/8K that comes with it's blue case...I dunno if that counts as a "stone holder"

Never mind…
I bought the Norton with the holder (the holder has huge rubber blocks to hold the stone so it doesn't slide when honing) but the rubber has a pungent smell… like a new car tire or fumes at the gas station. I don’t use the holder because of it “yuck”… still sitting in its box in the garage. My hone though is quite odorless.
But since you do not have the holder then it must be something else.
It is suggested the stone be stored wet, It could have been stored in a “damp” place and got moldy, and then they sprayed it with “moldicyde” (is there such a word?).
