I hate to tell you this 1200 W/D paper is way to course to be close to a final edge. You might get a shave off of it but it puts shivers up my spine to think of shaving with it. 8K is generally the point when guys think they can get a shave. I finish with stones form 12K to 15K depending on the razor then I go to chromium oxide in .5µ to .25 µ then .1 µ then to the strop. You can strop on folded newspaper if you can't wait to try the razor.

There are twice as many opinions as there are members on the forum. But I think there is something of a consensus that the general honing system for guys that want to do their own is a Norton 4/8K then to a pasted strop. There are tons of variations on this but that's the general idea.

I recommend you give SRP UK member poona a PM as he does honing in the UK. This way you will have a benchmark for sharp.

Mark, do you mean you lapped the hone with 1200 w/d paper or have you tried to hone the razor with the 1200 w/d paper?

I read it as you lapped the hone but I think Ken is of the opinion that you tried it on your razor?

    Please clarify.

Thats right i have lapped my hone using the sandpaper. I haven't tried to shave yet as the razor still needs stropping but as i said the strop is in the mail. Cheers Mark

OK, i think i need some help! I seem to have hit a wall. I don't seem to be making any progress i think i may have over honed and am not sure where to go from here, i have been trying the pyramids on the Norton very gently progression then stropping 30 laps on linen then 30 on leather but all thats happening after that is the razor just glides over the whiskers hardly removing any . I have heard about back honing but am not sure how to proceed, also when i do the TNT i can feel some roughness to-wards the toe of the blade! do i just work it on the 4000 side till this goes then resume pyramid pattern . thanks guys, i was really looking forward to having a truly great straight experience but as yet that has not happened, any how I'm not going to give up and nobody said this would be easy right!

I was going to recommend stropping with +pressure on a linen/ canvas strop followed by light stropping on leather before trying any honing...

But it appears I'm too late by your last post.

I think of honing as more like surgury, stropping - physical therapy. If the more conservative treatment provides the cure, all the better.

I tried stropping first, i did 30 laps on the linen and 30 on leather but the razor was pulling and it felt very uncomfortable if not painful and my face was very red for a good few hours after the shave. Thanks for the advice Scott
