New at str8, new at honing but sold on pyramid
Hi
I'm new at str8, been here for the last two month reading and learning.
I have this Boker King Cutter that I tried to hone it in progressive mode on a Norton 4k/8k with so-so results.
Today I've tried the pyramid method as described by Lynn. I'M SOLD , the razor is now shave ready. It passes the TNT, the TPT and the HHT with success.
I know I could get better result with finer hones and pastes but for me it's sharp enough to shave comfortably.

Well done. Hard to beat shaving with an edge you created.

Jacques,
Congrats on your success. That first time feels great, doesn't it?
I would caution you against disregarding your previous efforts, though. I've seen your story repeated many times: A new guy struggles for weeks with an edge that "just won't get sharp," then suddenly, like magic, his razor is sharp.
Part of it is improving your techinque, which takes practice. But I also suspect that your razor was just really dull to start with, and your previous "wasted" efforts were really laying the groundwork for a good edge.
The pyramid does work really well, but you're not going to fix a dull eBay razor by going through it once. Even with some experience behind me, I think it would take me a couple of hours with a Norton 4/8K to get a typical vintage razor shaving.
Keep at it!
