    Question noob question

Hi, i have an ebay str8 that had pitting so i sanded it to clean it up a little ,i would like to hone it, i have a combo coticul stone i dont know if this would be good enough to set the bevel.I have 600 grit 1500 grit and also 2000 grit sand paper would this be okay to use to establish the bevel and any idea how many strokes i should use.since i sanded and and used maas with dremel i am sure the i dulled the blade even further than it was to begin with.

I have a combo belgian as well and you definitely do NOT want to set a bevel on it. I'll let a more user more experienced with the sandpaper method of bevel setting chime in on that.

I would just wet some of the wet/dry sandpaper, assuming that is what you have and put it on the stone. I'd suggest the 1500 grit.

No clue really on the number of passes it would take. Probably in the area of 40-60. Try that and then see what you think. It really depends on what you did to the edge. Using a dremel usually won't mess up a bevel too much.

What has convinced you that the bevel isn't set already? Did you use the dremel on the edge?

If you suspect there might be a bevel then try your hone first and see how it goes, then go to the sandpaper.

You want to do as little damage as needed.

This might be a good time to read up the the TNT or just use your thumbpad for some feel of the edge as you work it up.

    Yep pretty easy!

I use wet/dry sandpaper wet until I pass a thumb nail teast all along the edge, and I have a nice consistant scratch pattern from the 1500 as seen at 60x. Then I move on to the hones. I've never counted the strokes but Alen is probably pretty close. I know it only takes a hundred or so to get rid of a decent sized naked eye visible nick.
