    Default Magnetized

I was getting ready to hone up a magnetized razor on a DMT, and was quite surprised when the blade attached flat to the plate. There is some resistance to making a stroke, but not a whole lot. Would this be harmful to the razor, and should it just be honed on a non-metallic hone?

What grit DMT are we talking about? I've honed a lot of magnetized razors on the 1200-grit DMT, and it doesn't seem to cause any problems. If you were trying to use the 8K grit, it might be hard to do ultra light strokes. But at the edge-restoring levels, you want to use a little pressure, anyway.

It is pretty surprising the first time, though, isn't it?

I had the same problem a while ago except that the magnetic pull was quite strong and prevented honing on the DMT 8K, there was too much pressure. I solved the problem by demagnetizing the razor using an old magnetic tape eraser/ demagnetizer I had laying around.

Both. I kept going on the 1200, but had the same hesitation about the stroke being too heavy on the 8000. It is not so strongly magnetized though, so I may just give it a go. Will just have to check more often.

Sounds like the same effect you get from lather on a barbers hone, I think you may be onto something there.
