    Default NOS with a 4k/8K

Would an "aggressive honing ratio" get a NOS razor up to "shave ready" or would you need to go down to a 220/1K. If so what would the lap pyramid be like? Thanks!

    Nooooo!

Start with only a step or two off the conservative pyramid. NOS razors are often very good off the bat.

Did you test the edge for sharpness? Doing so would give you a lot of guidance about where to start.

I received a NOS Dubl Duck that was very close to shave ready, which only needed a few strokes on the coticule. I received a NOS Wilhem Noelle "Amor" that had absolutely no bevel on it, so I started with a DMT 1200 plate.

The answer is....................................Who the heck knows???
Like Alan says most NOS razors are close to shave ready BUT not all...
You didn't say what brand so now we are really in the air...
Even looking at new production razors the factory bevel can vary greatly
I believe some of the vintage razors were much closer to shave ready and a easy quick sharpen to a great shave than others ... The real problem is that you have no idea what angle they used to set the bevel, you could try the black marker test but this starts to change the angle just by the test alone... My experience has been to strop the bejesus out them and try a shave just to say I did it... Then reset the bevel and hone as usual to a fine edge...
I just did this exact sequence on a NOS Craftsman....YMMV of course
    Good luck!!!!

    Default Honing a NOS Razor

Well as far as I have been led to believe and from reading above with a certain amount of agreement, me personally I would take a NOS razor to an 8k or TOS forst if I believed it was sharp to start with however on a butter knife with no bevel I would go to a 1000grit and set the bevel, thats what I have done in the past, even then if there is a slight sharpness to it I have gone to the 4k.

Its really however it works for you, thats the truth of the matter really, the pyramid system is a great guideline though. If its sharp with a good bevel dont be tempted to go nuts. The guys who posted before me gave good advice.

    regards,simon
