    Default Norton 4000/8000

    Hello all,

I want to purchase a stone for the first time. Where is the best place or website to get it? Anyone here have one for sale for a good price?

    Thanks,

    Default First time hone

What shape is your razor in? If it's a brand new TI or Dovo, they're not ready for shaving and will benefit greatly from a close examination with a Radio Shack illuminated microscope (about $10 and about as big as a Zippo lighter). You'll often see the most chips around the toe of the blade. These have to come out. For this purpose I use a belgian blue stone (4000 grit) and then a belgian coticule (8000 grit) and then about 50 strokes on a natural leather strop.

If your razor is really dull or old and "experienced", you may have a lot of honing to do to bring it back to shave ready. Again, examine it under the illuminated microscope so you know what you're starting with and can benchmark when you've made progress. If the razor is so dull it won't cut your finger, I re-set the bevel with a DMT1200 grit continuous diamond stone, then the blue, then the yellow, then the strop.

If you clean the blade after about 20 strokes on any stone and look at it under the microscope, you can see what you've accomplished.

Most of all, enjoy the process of honing and stropping and shaving. There's a lot to learn and this is a great group of guys who will help you. Last week we had the Massachusetts Get Togetha and about 25 guys showed up and we had a great time.

    Thanks Howard.

My razor was a new TI and I've used it 10-20 times. It shaves but I'm sure it could be much sharper. I'll pick up the scope from Radio Shack and check it out. If I pick up a Norton 4000/8000 will that be enough? Should I start with the 4000 or just try to touch it up with the 8000? I've been reading on the site and many recomend (especially Lynn) to use the "Honing Pyramid." How exactly does that work?

If there is ever a New York City get together I'd definitely attend.

    Thanks again.
