Thanks! I just want to buy one hone and be done. That is why I'm asking.
That is a very hypothetical question because you are not stranded on an island, you are on a shaving forum with a bunch of shaving nuts and if you are like the rest of us then you will not be getting just one hone regardless of what you tell yourself now . My answer to your hypothetical would be a nice big yellow coticule though. The relatively slow cutting power would not bother me on an island because I would probably have nothing better to do....that is unless I had the cheerleaders or Uma

Be careful that you don't get banned for this. On the other hand, if you do that often enough you might be able to strop on your face after a while.

But seriously, each time I set a bevel with the DMT 1200 grit, I have to fight the urge to go strop and shave with it. Luckily I managed to stay smart thus far.

+1 for the Coticule. It leaves a great, smooth edge, and LX_Emergeny reported it can be put to use for bevel-setting work too, when used with a heavy slurry. Nevertheless, if there's a supply-store on the island, I recommend buying a DMT-E hone too, certainly if they have Ebay on the island.

I would take her with me too... and a piano.

    .
Really you should give it a go.
I was afraid to do it, and I almost didn't, but in the spirit of honing and shaving research I decided to give it at least 1 try.

50 laps on the strop and I had a fabulous shave. I had to go toe leading and make scything motions, but the shave was really smooth.

If you have a 1200 grit DMT, really you should give it a try. if only just once. If I can shave off a DMT-C, you should be able to shave off a DMT-E

You're the devil in disguise, Lord Salvager...
Within an hour the ebay auction that I'm highest bidder on ends.
So, with some luck I'll end up with a razor that needs 1200 grit work... I 'll keep you posted how it goes, Dark Lord.

    vriendelijke groetjes,
    Bart.

    Gary,

Can you tell us anything about Uma Thurman hones? Do they come with a slurry or not?

I hope Gary doesn't mind me jumping in on this question, but here goes...

IMO the showdown between her and O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) is the most sexy scene in movie history.

So, is this all I need to keep my blade sharp and prep any new blades (aside from a strope)?

Maybe you could just ask the question because your hypothetical makes me think in a most sensible way for the situation! In other words, shaving would be the last thing on my mind!
I would be thinking a double grit stone in the 300/1000. That straight would quickly become my survival knife, and woe to any tasty creature that crossed my path!

Yes, but don't buy it from classicshaving.

go to www.theperfectedge.com and buy one from howard.
Howard is a member here, and his coticules are significantly cheaper than that.
He also checks his stones before he sells them so that you are sure to get a good one.

I have bought from howard several times, as did many people here, and he is a great guy to deal with.
