    Default Col. Conk Grit?

I have a Col. Conk hone that came with a beginner's straight set, and I can't find any information about how fine it is. It's the hone you see near the middle of this page:

    http://www.col-conk.com/boxed.htm

Does anybody have a sense for how this hone measures up to finishing stones like the Norton 4000/8000? I feel like I'm getting good results from my razor, but I've got no basis for an objective comparison.

    Thanks,
    Alexander

I have the same hone, don't despair, it is actually a good hone despite what you might hear, BUT:
    1. it is not a finishing hone. not even close. under a microscope it looks like 2500 grit or so
    2. it is prolly not flat. you will need to lap it before you use it, I know I sure did!
    3. it is small, and single sided thanks to that stupid wooden paddle. I have yet to get mine off the wood, although I wish I could so I could use both sides. using 1 side all the time means more frequent lapping.
    4. I use a pyramid of the conk hone and an 8000 grit waterstone before I move on to finishing stuff. (swaty, then chromeOx, then strop)

You must be doing some serious honing if you have to frequently lap your arkansas stone

I have the same stone and after lapping it, it's as smooth as glass. I'd put it in a 4000 grit ballpark range.
