Default Have any of you tried these?

I'm not sure where all Lee Valley serves, but they're a pretty neat place...

    Has anyone ever tried these?

I was thinking I might be able to glue one down to some planed lumber ripped down to three inches... If I could hone the razor, cutting edge leading, without cutting in to the paper, it could really do the trick for avoiding the purchase of the pricey 8000 grit stone.

    What do you think?

There is a fellow in Edmonton who is selling a "Hone Strop" on ebay that looks like it uses the Lee Valley honeing films.

I'm working on putting together a system using honing film right now.

The trick is getting a perfectly smooth substrate, I'll be using glass. The next problem will be getting the honing film on the substrate perfectly smoothly. It's my hope that the combination of the adhesive and the mylar backing isn't flexible enough to cause the edge to round.

You can get 1 micron film from other sources and thats closer to 8000 than the .5 Lee carries. What you really want is 6 micron for the 4000 grit size and 3 micron for the 8000 but those aren't available.

I've got a couple of test razors lined up and I'll probably be putting a review of my method up next week, If things work out the way I hope them to. There have been guys who have managed to use film to get razors sharp but no one has put together a honing guide using this stuff.

You could use Plexiglases instead of glass... cheap, easy to cut and just as flat/smooth as glass... however is prone to scratching... i used it in the early years honing my razor... works fine.
