    Default honing trouble

    Hi all,
So i am trying to hone a beau brummel 5/8 wedge i got off of ebay.
I have two barber hones from tilly, a medium grit brown one, and a fine frictionite 24.
i have tried using both, but i can't seem to get it nearly as sharp as the full hollow boker i have from dbolger. When i strop the wedge up like crazy for a long time, i can get it to cut a hair with the hht, in maybe one place, sometimes. Do i need to just use the medium hone for something like 100 strokes ot more, and then the fine one for another 100? is that too much, because i have done quite a but of honing on both hones already.

Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. I can supply pictures if needed, though i don't know how they could help.

Thanks for your time and help!

    Aaron

There is no way to help you with this description.

Your razor could be a disaster with a warped blade and/or lots of chips. I have not heard of that particular razor.

Wedges can be very difficult to hone if they have wide bevels.

The stones you mention are not ones I recognize (nor do I know who 'tilly" is, but perhaps someone else does).

Generally you need to establish a bevel first, something that looks like a line at 40X. Have you done that? Usually you need need to work up to 8000 grit to do that.

Once there, then you can start using barber stones. I have lots of barber stones, and I have found that they have many different grits, and all, even new ones, need to be lapped first.

I have purchased over 100 razors on ebay, and two arrived shaving. The others required starting at 600 grit and working up to repair the nicks, chips, and corrosion damage.

    Hope this helps.
