Being the anal retentive compulsive idiot that I am, I use a cutting board that has a groove around the edge, that I cut out at one end so I can add huge amounts of water, and have it run off into the sink in the shave den while I hone away,,,,,,
Whew was that a long sentence or what...
It is one of the composite plastic like boards so none of the hones slip around, not even the Shapton Glastone....
Now the SWMBO can't bitch because I never make a mess, and I am not bugging her while honing....
    So yeah a stable surface......

Always on the table, with the hone facing north/south. I only have large hones though.

I use the Norton in its top cover. Table top. The hone @ Northwest/Southeast (45degree) position. Sitting or standing (depending on my mood). A spritzer bottle for water (tried the pouring cup thing… too messy).

"Synch" music and motion... I'll hone for hours at a time.

Depends on stone and razor. Sometimes I hold the hone on my hand, which I find pleasantly. But with a big hone, or a razor that calls for some guidance of a second hand, I 'll put the hone on the table, high enough above the surface to get some knuckle space.
