    I have the best luck honing smiling edges if I hold the hone in my hand, or more appropriately _on_ my hand since I hone with DMT D8EE and D8E (for bevel-setting).

    It seems, as has been mentioned earlier, that it's much easier to get consistent edges on smiling blades this way, and the only razor I have with a "straight" edge (my DOVO "classic" special) doesn't suffer from it at all.

    I make a mess when I hone. I use the kitchen table.

    I have a board made that fits over my kitchen sink, I do all my knives there as well
