Thanked: 0DMT Question
So I have gotten into restoring razors and got my first razor all nice and ready to have a bevel set on it. I already have a DMT D8EE but I had heard it wasn't good for setting bevels on. I went to order a DMT D8E and accidently ordered a DMT D8F. The company shipped it so fast that their customer service wasn't able to swap it before shipping but are offering to RMA it for me if I choose. My question to you guys is, is the D8F too coarse a stone to set bevel on and I should send it back or is it ok to use?

It is too course for my taste, but some people use them. I would switch it for the E

Jumping from 600 to 8000 grit is a little steep, but if any hone could do it, it would be the DMT EE. If the company is sending a replacement, I'd say just be patient. But you probably could make that setup work if you really had to...

Thanked: 150How much is the shipping for the trade? because you might be better off getting both, if you can afford it.

Thanked: 26Alex's question referred to restoring razors. However, I want to sharpen NOS razors and a few eBay razors in good condition. I'm not into restoring razors. If I have the D8EE as a finisher and the D8E to set the bevel, do I need anything in between? Thanks.

Thanked: 150That setup will work just fine for a long time. If you don't intend on doing any major bevel work, the 1200 and 8k are going to work just fine (I have all of the DMT's, and use those two the most, by far).
p.s. you can make a great plain paddle strop while you're making the pasted one (I kinda prefer paddles). Or just get twice the leather you need and put a plain strip on the other side of the one you are gonna make just to try it out.

Thanked: 26I was going to use balsa or poplar for my strop. Where would I get the leather?
EDIT: Hand American sells Horse Butt Strips but I'll stick to my balsa/poplar approach.Last edited by TstebinsB; 04-27-2008 at 07:12 AM.
