I have tried it both ways on the 2 sided wooden paddle strop, I now just take the tape off after I leave the stones... I have found no difference between the two... of course as with anything else having to do with straight razors YMMV

    I leave the tape on.

I leave the tape on even when I test shave, incase I need to go back to the stones. Saves me having to re-tape the razor and there's no difference whether the spine is taped or not during shaving.

Personally I hate tape. The only time I use it is if I have a razor with ornamentation I want to protect or if its a Zowada with a double bevel but for stropping I never use tape.
